Our second product line is a pocket learning camera and AI companion for people in unfamiliar places. It launches with English and Mandarin Chinese, for people preparing for or taking a trip to mainland China, and it is built for adults first while remaining usable by families and older travelers. We refer to it as Wenlumi while we test the name with the people who will carry it.
Think of it as a language immersion device you can carry. Immersion is the most natural way to learn a language: you meet a word when you need it, somewhere you will remember. A trip to China is full of those moments, and most of them are lost the second a phone app finishes translating. The companion keeps them, so every menu, sign and short conversation can become a piece of Mandarin that is yours.
Translate menus, signs and objects with the camera
The promise is practical independence today and growing ability over time. Point the camera at a cup, a sign, or a menu and press Capture. The device reads the characters or recognizes the object and shows the Chinese, the pinyin, the meaning, and the audio. “Help me order” gives you a phrase you can use right now. “Teach me” explains one small thing about it. If the menu says 少冰, you learn it means less ice, how to say it, and how it differs from 去冰, no ice.
An English to Mandarin translator for real conversations
To talk with someone, hold the Talk button, speak, and release. The recognized text appears so you can correct it before the translation plays, and a large control switches direction for the reply. It is turn-based, and it says so; we do not pretend to interpret both sides at once. Translation is always one action away from standby and is never gated behind a lesson, a subscription prompt, or a character animation.
Learn Mandarin while traveling, only when you choose to
Learning happens only when you choose it. Save a phrase or a photo and it becomes a personal learning item tied to the place you met it. A short daily recap asks you to recall up to five of them, say them aloud, and apply them in a changed situation, such as ordering two teas tomorrow after ordering one today. Review schedules respond to what you actually remember, not to taps or time spent, and skipping a review never takes away your essentials.
An offline translator for China, no VPN required
The companion is built for a country where the services many travelers rely on are not available. Its core works without Google services, without a VPN, and without a network at all: the Mandarin pack, offline speech translation, camera lookup, your saved phrases, and your hotel address stay on the device. Optional paid tutoring in the cloud adds role-play for upcoming situations, richer explanations, and backup, and is metered visibly. When the cloud is unreachable, the device says so and keeps working with what it has.
Cultural notes and honest limits
Cultural notes cover meals, greetings, transport, shopping, and everyday etiquette, each reviewed by a bilingual editor and dated, and each careful to distinguish literal meaning, likely intent, and advice. They acknowledge regional variation rather than presenting one custom as universal. The companion also shows its uncertainty in plain language, asks when an input is ambiguous, never infers dietary safety from a photograph of food, and in medical, legal, or emergency conversations makes its limits visible and helps you reach a person.
