Our north star

We believe a personal device belongs in every household and in every traveler’s pocket, and that it should earn its place by making people feel something, not by capturing their attention. The companions we build are meant to warm the heart and nudge people toward each other. If a family gathers around a Timebox to hear the story behind a photograph, or a visitor orders their first meal in Mandarin without reaching for a phone, thanks to a pocket language companion, it has done its job.

A companion should also leave you more capable than it found you. Translation on its own gets you through the moment; a good companion lets each useful moment become a small lesson you can reuse tomorrow. It never makes you sit through a lesson, a prompt, or an animation to get help right now, and it never counts a word as learned because you happened to see it.

Getting there requires AI that can see and understand the world around it the way a good friend does, and doing that well is expensive. Rather than wait until every model can run on a chip in a living room or a pocket, we are building a hybrid. The device itself handles the essentials: recognizing that a photograph contains people, a pet, or a birthday cake; reading a printed menu; translating a short spoken exchange. It does this locally, and that work never has to leave the device. The richer work, such as describing a scene in full sentences, explaining a custom, or role-playing tomorrow’s conversation, runs in a privacy-minded cloud that we operate under strict controls.

We are honest about this split because it shapes the promises we can make. Local processing is a real privacy benefit, and we lean on it wherever hardware allows. Where we do use the cloud, we treat it as a trust we have been given: data is encrypted in transit and at rest, access is limited to the people who need it to operate and support the product, nothing is used for advertising, and nothing is sold. As on-device hardware becomes more capable and affordable, we intend to move more of the work back onto the device.

Our north star is simple. A companion that a family is glad to have in the room and a traveler is glad to have in a pocket, that understands their moments well enough to bring them back at the right time, and that handles those moments with the care they deserve.
